What Is 18K Gold?

18K gold is a high-quality gold alloy made from 75% pure gold and 25% other metals, such as silver & copper. The additional metals increase strength and durability while maintaining gold’s rich appearance. Popular for fine jewellery, 18K gold offers an excellent balance of purity, luxury, colour and durability.

The 18K signifies that it contains 18 parts pure gold and 6 parts other metals, pure gold would be 24K gold which is deemed too soft for Jewellery. For buyers wanting  fine jewelry that combines lasting value with everyday wearability, 18K gold offers various advantages. Its higher precious metal content provides a richer colour than other karat types, while its alloying metals ensure sufficient durability for long-term wear. This combination has made it especially popular for significant pieces like engagement rings and heirloom jewelry.

What is the purity of 18K gold?

18K gold contains exactly 75% pure gold (18 parts out of 24), giving it a fineness rating of 750. 18K gold strikes an optimal balance between precious metal content and practical durability. The remaining 25% consists of carefully selected metals that enhance the gold's performance while preserving its desirable properties.

Is 18K gold real gold?

Yes, 18K gold is real gold. It is made from 75% pure gold and 25% other metals, which are added to improve its strength and durability. Its high gold content gives 18K jewellery a rich, luxurious appearance while making it more suitable for everyday wear than softer 24K pure gold.

18K Gold Color

18K gold displays a richer, warmer color than lower karat options due to its higher gold content. 18K gold is available in yellow, white & rose colours. These colours are  achieved by various metal combinations that complement the gold content:

Yellow Gold

Yellow gold is commonly mixed with metals such as silver, copper and zinc. These metals make pure gold stronger and more durable while helping preserve its warm yellow colour. Its high gold content gives it a rich, warm golden colour and beautiful lustre.

White Gold

18K white gold is made from 75% pure gold mixed with 25% other metals to create a lighter, silvery-white appearance and improve durability. Common alloying metals include palladium, silver, platinum or zinc.

White gold jewellery is also commonly rhodium plated, giving it a brighter, whiter finish and additional surface protection.

Rose Gold

18K rose gold is made from 75% pure gold mixed with other metals, primarily copper and often silver. A large percentage of copper, often over 20%, gives rose gold its distinctive warm pink or reddish tone while also increasing its strength and durability. Its combination of high gold purity and romantic colour makes 18K rose gold a popular choice for fine jewellery.

18K Gold Durability

18K gold offers an excellent balance between high gold purity and everyday durability. While pure 24K gold is relatively soft, 18K gold contains 25% alloying metals that increase its strength and resistance to deformation. It can still develop scratches with regular wear, 18K gold is durable enough for rings, necklaces, earrings and other fine jewellery when properly cared for.

18K Gold Care

To keep 18K gold jewellery looking its best, avoid wearing it during strenuous exercise, manual work or activities where it may be knocked or scratched. The softer nature of the metal means that it is more prone to scratches and wear marks. Keep it away from harsh chemicals, chlorine and abrasive cleaning products. Store pieces separately in a soft-lined jewellery box or pouch to prevent scratching, and clean them gently using warm water & mild soap with a soft cloth.

Regular maintenance becomes particularly important with 18K gold pieces. Professional cleaning and inspection should be scheduled more frequently, particularly for items worn daily. For white 18K gold jewelry, the rhodium plating may need more frequent renewal, as the softer base metal can show wear more readily through the plating. Despite these additional care requirements, many consider the superior aesthetics and luxury appeal worth it.

Does 18K gold tarnish or change colour over time?

18K gold is highly resistant to tarnishing because it contains 75% pure gold, which does not readily react with air or moisture. Unlike lower karat golds that are much more prone to tarnishing.

However, the remaining 25% consists of alloying metals that can occasionally cause slight dulling or discolouration over time.

With proper care and occasional cleaning, 18K gold can maintain its rich colour and lustre for many years.

Yellow and rose 18K gold generally retain their colour extremely well, although they may become slightly dull and develop scratches with regular wear. Cleaning and polishing can restore their original lustre.

18K white gold may show a more noticeable change because it is commonly rhodium plated. As this bright white coating gradually wears away, the naturally warmer tone of the white-gold alloy underneath can become visible. Rhodium replating can restore its bright white appearance.

Is 18K gold suitable for everyday wear?

Yes, 18K gold is an excellent choice for engagement and wedding rings, offering a balance of luxurious colour, purity and durability. Containing 75% pure gold, it has a rich colour and is strengthened by additional alloying metals, making it suitable for everyday wear.

Is 18K gold worth the higher price point?

For many buyers, 18K gold is worth the higher price, particularly when choosing fine jewellery intended to last a lifetime. Its 75% pure gold content is significantly higher than 14K or 9K gold, giving it greater intrinsic gold value and a rich, luxurious appearance.

The higher price reflects its greater gold content. While lower-karat gold can offer greater hardness at a lower price, 18K gold provides an attractive balance of purity, durability, colour and luxury, making it especially popular for engagement rings, wedding bands and other significant jewellery pieces.
