How To Remove A Ring That Is Stuck On Your Finger?

Especially during the summer, warmer months of the year we may notice that our fingers swell up a bit from the heat. Sometimes this can mean we get our favourite ring stuck on our finger especially if the ring was on the smaller side to begin with.
Alcohol consumption, high salt diets and dehydration can also contribute to slightly puffy fingers. Intense exercise can cause blood flow to the extremities which can also mean swelling fingers.
There are a plethora of reasons that fingers can increase in size from pregnancy, injured hands, infections, blood pressure meds, other medications & arthritis can even cause the knuckles to increase in size causing rings to get stuck on the finger.
Inactivity while sleeping or late at night can cause fluid to settle in the extremities which can also lead to swelling of the fingers. When you fly, fingers can swell up too, causing rings to feel tighter.
Firstly, it is important to remain calm and know that you will be able to get it off. By staying calm you are ensuring that you are less likely to encourage swelling by repeatedly trying to jam it off. Just calmly give it a little wiggle off and if it doesn’t work then try one our tips below:
What to do in these situations?
- Use a lubricant such as olive oil, coconut oil, Vaseline, windex or liquid soap. This should make it a lot easier to slide off.
- Use ice packs - place ice on your finger so that you reduce the swelling of your finger - once swelling has been reduced you should be able to slide the ring off easily.
- Use dental floss - by using dental floss & weaving it around the ring you should be able to get a better grip of the ring and be able to pull it off.
- Raise your hand above your head for 5-10 minutes. This will drain excess fluid & blood from your hand and should enable you to more easily pull the ring off.
- If all else fails, as a last resort, you will be able to visit your local jeweller who can cut the ring off for you.
