An Introduction To Rhodium Plating
Share
Rhodium is a silver-white, highly reflective, and corrosion-resistant precious metal belonging to the platinum group of metals. It's known for its rarity and high value, and is one of the most expensive metals in the world.
Depending on fluctuating market conditions rhodium is often twice the price of gold. Rhodium is an extremely rare metal & only 20-25 tons of rhodium are extracted annually, whereas around 2500 tons of gold are mined every year.
High end retailers such as Tiffany & Co & Cartier, use this precious metal to finish their white gold pieces. Now let’s look at why…
Why rhodium plate your jewellery?
Rhodium can be plated over a variety of metals, but it’s most commonly plated over other white/silvery metals, like white gold and silver, as they are the most similar in colour.
The reason white gold jewellery is plated with rhodium in the first place is to enhance the look of the jewellery because white gold without rhodium will have a slightly dullish silver look to it. The difference once plated however is an attractive super high lustre & shiny appearance.
Silver jewellery is often rhodium plated too. Silver jewellery naturally tarnishes over time & a rhodium plating will prevent this tarnishing effect because it is super corrosion resistant. Additionally, rhodium is highly durable and will protect the base metal from scratches and dents.
Rhodium is also a hypoallergenic metal and therefore rhodium plated jewellery is an excellent choice for those who have sensitive skin. It doesn’t easily corrode or react to your skin.
Rhodium plated sterling silver & sterling silver?
Despite rhodium being a highly durable metal the rhodium plating will eventually wear off exposing the base metal. How long it will last will depend on how frequently you wear your rhodium plated jewellery & how you care for it.
When compared to sterling silver jewellery which requires a regular clean & polish to maintain its shine, rhodium plating could last you a several years before requiring a re-plating to get your piece back to its original shine.
To keep your rhodium-plated jewellery looking its best, it’s advisable to remove it before showering. Store it in a dry place and clean it gently with a soft cloth and mild soap when needed. Avoid exposing it to harsh chemicals and perfumes to maintain its shine and durability.
